Roy was born in Healdsburg, but when he was a year old, he and his family moved to Mexico City, where he grew up for most of his childhood. When Roy was thirteen, his family relocated once again to the US where he went to a large public high school in Chicago. Roy earned a scholarship to play soccer at Northern Illinois University and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. He wanted to be a police officer, and after college he joined the Police Academy. After some time in the Police Academy, Roy decided that being a police officer just wasn't for him and moved back to Sonoma County .
Roy’s sister-in-law used to work at Sonoma Academy and told him about a part time job that they were offering. On his first day of work he remembers he dressed up quite formally, but soon realized this was no ordinary school. He loved working here and soon after, that part-time job became full-time.
Roy has been working at Sonoma Academy since 2013. “Time flies by really quickly,” he says. In addition to his work in the Admissions Department, Roy coaches our boys soccer team. He loves working at SA because of the people. “What sets us apart from other schools is the people here; there are so many talented students and teachers. When people come to open house or visit days they can see that”.
His favorite part of the week is Community Meeting, because that’s when everyone gets to see the talent. "You get to see people sing, play instruments, and give amazing speeches," he says. He tells people it’s like a free concert. From proctoring the SSAT to coaching the boy’s soccer team, Roy loves to interact with students. He tells people that they make his day. He enjoys everything about being a soccer coach and tries to make everyone have fun. We are extremely lucky to have Roy in our community.
