Pam took over the Mandarin program at Sonoma Academy in 2014, when only a small number of students were interested in learning Mandarin. Thanks to Pam’s experience, passion, and dedication, the program has flourished and quadrupled in size.
Pam earned her BA in International Studies from Miami University in Ohio, with a minor in Chinese. She also spent time studying abroad at Northeast Normal University in Changchun, China through the US State Department's National Security Language Institute. There she immersed herself in the language and culture.
Earlier in her teaching career, Pam founded the Mandarin program at a high school in rural Ohio. This new offering eventually became very popular, going on to grow into one of the largest high school Mandarin programs in the country.
In addition to teaching Mandarin, Pam is one of the advisors for our yearbook. She also helps her Yearbook students give back to the surrounding community, as they volunteer with local elementary school students to help them produce their own yearbook.
When asked what her favorite part of her day at SA is, Pam says, “ I love the entire day! Especially teaching my fun and creative students.” Pam loves how the staffulty at Sonoma Academy focus on developing all students holistically, providing them with opportunities to pursue multiple endeavors in and outside of the classroom.
When she's not teaching, Pam enjoys creating pottery and spending time with her family, including her two children and two dogs. Students may not know this, but Pam is also passionate about playing the flute—before becoming a teacher, she traveled across Europe performing!
