SA Debate at the first league debate of the year

Debate Shines at First League Debate of the Year!

Laila McClay, Humanities Teacher & Debate Head Coach
Twenty-seven Debaters competed at the first Golden Gate Speech Association League Debate of the season this past Saturday at Santa Rosa High School against hundreds of debaters from across the Bay Area.

In Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Reece Stromberg '19 earned a winning record in SA's first foray into this historic one-vs-one style of debate.

In Novice Policy Debate, fourteen debaters bravely participated in their very first high school debates. Every debater earned great comments and feedback from their judges, and two teams earned winning records: Grace Galusha '19 and Sydney Sullivan '19 and Alejandro Tonda '19 and Elijah Lakritz '20. Shout-outs to Antonio Carillo '20, Colton Rowe '20, Kelly Needleman '20, Jonas Crean '20, Isabelle Elder '19, Olivia Synek '19, Emily Kassner-Marks '19, Rachel Gothelf '19, Olivia Jacobs '20, and Christian Hernandez '20 for jumping into their first high school debates! Nothing makes me happier as a coach than to see new debaters coming out of their first debates with huge smiles on their faces!

In JV Policy Debate, freshmen phenoms Izzy Cohen '20 and Micaela Peavey '20 were undefeated and Atticus Cohen '20 and Hannah Nabavi '20 earned winning records. Also earning a winning record in JV: first-time debater Samantha Hoppe '17 and second-year debater Emily Ibañez-Arroyo '19.

In Varsity Policy Debate, Caleb Kornfein '17 and Aris Saxena '17 earned winning records while Claire Stephens '19, Gibran Hassan '19, Maya Nichols '19, and Sarah Shi '19 all pushed themselves by competing in the Varsity division in only their second year of competition.

Huge thanks to Assistant Coaches Lani Frazer and Josh Martin for their coaching and support on Saturday and to Librarian Extraordinaire Michele Martin for judging alongside SA parents Amy Galusha, Ken Lakritz, Lisa Jacobs, Edna Needleman, and Rodney Gothelf.

Next up, SA Debate prepares for the 2nd league debate on November 12 at James Logan High School in Union City.
