Jim received a BA in Earth Science/Environmental Studies from Dartmouth, and an MS in Earth and Environmental Systems Science from Stanford. He has worked as a field and laboratory geologist, a database administrator in San Francisco and Washington, DC, and a teacher of many STEM courses.

Widely known for his fun and engaging classes, Jim knows how to make challenging subjects interesting. His Applied Math students do interdisciplinary projects to gain insight into how mathematics affects their everyday lives, studying subjects like sports statistics and business trends. He also has taken his students to Six Flags to gain a better understanding of the physics behind roller coasters, and his AS Geology course is one of the most popular STEM courses at SA.

When we asked Jim about the best part of his day, he said “I love walking onto our campus. The extreme beauty of the facilities and setting get me every time. I deeply admire the high level of interest I see in our students, and am inspired by the quality and dedication of the faculty."

Outside of school, Jim applies his science knowledge to a different kind of laboratory: the kitchen! He loves making all kinds of food, and he shared his culinary skills with students during a recent Molecular Gastronomy Intersession course. He is also an avid cyclist and devoted dad.
